Radiology networking
Clinicians worldwide are taking full advantage of PACSMail, the innovative radiology networking service by UK healthcare technology company Sybermedica. Digital imaging has transformed working practices within radiology departments, and the next big question is how to share images and reports with referring doctors, physiotherapists and other clinical colleagues. Transfer by CD is laborious and slow, and enabling direct links between hospital systems is expensive and complex. PACSMail uses secure clinical networking technology to solve this problem, allowing clinicians to share diagnostic images and reports on-line with colleagues. The service is as simple to use as e-mail, and setting up an account takes just a few minutes.

Microbiological safety
UK-based manufacturer of aseptically filled blood plasma products and part of NHSBT, Bio Products Laboratory (BPL) has further enhanced its environmental monitoring programme by installing bespoke remote SAS microbial air samplers from Cherwell Laboratories. Since plasma products are administered intravenously, their microbiological safety is critical. Therefore, as part of an upgrade to BPL’s Grade A aseptic filling suite, where glove ports have been installed to minimise any risk of operator contamination and ensuing downtime, remote air sampling was necessitated for environmental monitoring. The SAS Super Isolator is part of the SAS family of microbial air sampling solutions. Its sampling head, located separately within the area to be remotely monitored, is stainless steel and compatible with disinfection systems such as Vaporised Hydrogen Peroxide (VHP).

ADVIA chemistry reagents
Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics has introduced concentrated Cholesterol, the 15th ADVIA Chemistry reagent in concentrated format. ADVIA Chemistry concentrated reagents offer up to 3060 tests per wedge, whilst still giving identical results to the conventional ADVIA non-concentrated reagents. This increased capacity is of particular benefit to high throughput laboratories, extending processing time and increasing laboratory productivity. Concentrated reagent wedges liberate space on the reagent carousel, allowing laboratories to extend testing repertoire. This consolidation of tests onto high throughput routine ADVIA Chemistry reduces turnaround times and increases the laboratory’s processing efficiency. “Fast and predictable turnaround times are both essential requirements of pathology services in the UK,” said Ibti Rashid, product manager for Clinical Chemistry.
