WHAT IS FINSPAN?
In a previous column, we reviewed the superb Wingspan (and its expansions). Finspan comes from the same family of games, sharing its theme while introducing a range of new mechanics and shifting the focus to aquatic life. You take on the role of marine researchers exploring different oceanic zones, collecting fish and building an efficient marine ecosystem. The Sharks & Reefs expansion introduces exciting new gameplay elements, allowing players to nurture coral reefs across three dive sites, play reef fish to gain powerful benefits and unleash sharks to scatter schools of fish, creating new strategic opportunities and a more dynamic underwater ecosystem.
IS IT FUN?
Certainly. This visually impressive game creates an immediate sense of awe with its vertically oriented board and beautifully illustrated cards and tokens. Finspan is played over four rounds, each representing a week of research. On each turn, players can choose from a range of actions, such as playing fish cards or diving at specific sites, with the aim of collecting fish, hatching eggs and achieving objectives to score the points needed to win. Sharks & Reefs adds several interesting new dimensions to the gameplay.
Players must nurture coral reefs in order to play the powerful reef fish, while healthy reefs also provide valuable end-of-game bonuses. The sharks introduce an engaging ecological dynamic by scattering fish and leaving behind scraps that other species can consume, creating a more dynamic and interconnected ecosystem. Like its predecessor, the game is beautifully crafted, producing thoughtful, engaging and highly replayable experiences. However, it is perhaps slightly less complex, making it more accessible for newer players to get to grips with.
IS IT EDUCATIONAL?
It goes to great lengths to create an authentic and immersive experience, providing ample opportunities for use in an educational context. In addition to richly developed and complex marine ecosystems, it includes fascinating biological details. For example, the imagery, details on each fish card. A personal favourite is the furry coffinfish that can increase its size by up to 30% by inflating with water and can hold its breath for up to four minutes. Every species featured in the game has been reviewed by marine biologists for scientific accuracy. There is even an addendum on the game's website that discusses the scientific accuracy of the content and explains the areas where artistic licence has been taken to enhance gameplay. First class.
CONCLUSION
Finspan is a truly excellent game, full of rich gameplay with a big enough range of strategic decisions to make every game different. It‘s so beautifully designed with its art and board, making it a must have.
