The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) have given the go ahead for a project to develop a new light source facility in the UK.

Know-how from the Daresbury Laboratory, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Diamond Light Source will all contribute to the design and construction of the planned world leading facility that has been named the New Light Source (NLS). The development team composed of researchers from these facilities will take a combined 28 staff-years and will be supplemented by expertise from UK universities making the project a UK wide effort.
Project leader Professor Jon Marangos from Imperial College London said: “The project team will face many technical challenges during the course developing the NLS but I am confident we have the expertise to produce a robust case that will fully exploit the science opportunities on offer.”
The NLS will use intense, ultra-short pulse photon beams to probe new details of materials. With the ability to investigate the structure of atoms and molecules in unprecedented precision the new facility will become a new scientific tool for a range of science research from physics to biology.
