Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded for cell research
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to three researchers for their discoveries of how human cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.
William G Kaelin, Gregg L Semenza and Sir Peter J Ratcliffe have shared this year’s prize in physiology or medicine for their research, which identifies the molecular machinery that regulates gene activity in response to varying levels of oxygen.
The discoveries have importance for physiology and have already paved the way for new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and other diseases, according to the Nobel Prize website.
Sir Peter Radcliffe is a British doctor and the Director of Clinical Research at the Francis Crick Institute in London.
The Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry will be announced tomorrow and Wednesday, respectively.
