Nobel Prizes 2026 science winners named

This year’s three Nobel Prizes for natural science have been shared by six laureates from the USA, Germany, Japan and France.

The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine went to psychiatrist and bioengineer Karl Deisseroth (USA, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stanford University), German biochemist and biophysicist Peter Hegemann (Germany, Humboldt University of Berlin), and biophysicist Georg Nagel (Germany, University of Würzburg) for their work into light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.

American physicist Francis Halzen (University of Wisconsin-Madison) was the solo winner of the Prize for Physics for his discovery of high energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin and research for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

The 2026 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was shared between France’s Henri B. Kagan (Université Paris-Sud)and Japan’s Kenso Soai (Tokyo University of Science) for their discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.
