Show Preview: Insider view from the outside

The Lab Facilities Design & Development Summit Europe places the focus clearly on the built environment with a range of pertinent case studies.

In its own words it is “the only European lab facilities event covering the full project lifecycle from concept to completion”. The Lab Facilities Design & Development Summit Europe is a significantly different beast from laboratory shows such as CHEMUK, analytica and Lab Innovations in a number of respects.

Most obviously, its focus; the event is squarely focused on the macro level – the bricks and mortar, HVAC, real estate and layout.

Next, its timeline tends to be much longer, stretching over the entire lifecycle of projects rather than more narrowly focused on operational workflow.

And while the same themes of automation and sustainability recur, their application is related much more to structural issues.

Its title and the choice of the ‘summit’ rather than show label provides an indication of the speaker and visitor demographics: corporate, institutional and senior level with a strong leaning towards the C-suite and those who control budgets and strategy.

As conference director Ellen Robinson outlines: “Rapid advances in research, increasing automation and changing scientific workflows are driving demand for laboratories that are not only fit for today, but capable of evolving over the next decade and beyond.

“At the same time, delivering new and refurbished lab facilities has become significantly more complex. Heightened sustainability expectations, tighter capital and operational budgets, increasing regulatory complexity and the need to balance diverse stakeholder priorities are placing significant strain on traditional approaches to delivery.”

Leading universities such as Cambridge and Imperial London are represented alongside institutions such as Francis Crick, plus leading pharma players such as GSK.

Representing them is a preponderance of operations managers, facilities directors, principals and senior architects. Delegates are invitation-only with strict qualification criteria. Don’t expect to find entry level attendees.

Not surprisingly, then, there is a heavyweight array of case studies spanning the Cavendish Laboratory, leading US research institute Emory University and the Crick Institute. Each session is fielded by senior participants in the projects.

Organised by AMG World, the Lab Facilities Design & Development Summit Europe takes place at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London on 30 June 2026.
