Solar flare

On 11th March, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured a significant burst of radiation known as a solar flare.

What is displayed as a bright flash of light can disturb GPS and communications signals but cannot pass through the Earth's atmosphere. However, when accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME) disruption to the magnetosphere can occur causing disturbance of terrestrial electrical supplies etc.
