A confocal microscope image of polyps from a colony of Obelia sp. hydrozoans. These marine organisms form stalked colonies of specialised 'hydarnths'. Here there are two gastrozooids with tentacles used to capture passing plankton on which they feed and two gonozooids with reproductive medusae inside.
This image won the Gold Award (18-25) at the International Images for Science 2016 and was taken by Teresa A Zgoda. Entries are now open for the 2017 competition with the closing date midnight on the 30th April.
