Next-gen optical tweezers

Optical tweezers require laser beams to hold particles in place. But the high intensities of light involved can damage live biological specimens. To remedy this, UK researchers have developed optically trapped micro-rotors. As the micro-rotors rotate, they create a wave in the liquid surrounding the particle that exerts a force to manipulate the particle’s movement. The team, comprised of researchers from the Universities of Glasgow, Exeter and Bristol, had their findings published in Nature Communications.
