Cancer Research UK is providing £60 million in funding for three international research programmes.
Research teams across North America, Israel, and the UK and Europe will look into how the microbiome could be manipulated to treat bowel cancer; new ways to treat cancers linked to chronic inflammation; and why cancers develop in some tissues but not in others.
Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said: “We’re excited to be able to fund such innovative research. These teams have five years to try to answer these complex questions about a disease that affects so many people, and we look forward to crossing new frontiers in our understanding of cancer.”
Major US institutions will be leading these projects, including Harvard Medical School, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the University of California.
The research teams will join a growing community of researchers taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Grand Challenge competition, which aims to overcome the biggest challenges facing cancer researchers.
