Investment by the Higher Education Funding Council for England will support the development of a biomedical engineering hub at Imperial College London’s new campus.
Based in White City, London, the facility will bring together more than 500 engineers, scientists and clinicians. It will be housed in the Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub, which is being built after a £40m gift from Imperial alumnus Sir Michael Uren OBE and his foundation.
Alice P. Gast, Imperial College London’s President, said: “The Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub is one of our remarkable multidisciplinary hubs at White City that address some of the world’s big challenges. Its vision, ambition and potential is unrivalled. The facility, and its world-leading research, will be an epicentre of biomedical engineering innovation.”
Co-directors at the multidisciplinary hub will be orthopaedic surgeon Professor Justin Cobb and engineer Professor Anthony Bull. Research areas will include new technologies for the early detection, monitoring and treatment of cancers and technology to aid recovery from nervous system injuries.
The £20m funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) through the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (UK RPIF) in addition from the donation from Sir Michael Uren, will house a 14 storey research building which will house life-changing research into new and affordable medical technology.
This round of funding is in addition to £35m of funding from UK RPIF in 2012 that will support two interconnected facilities also based on the campus. The London School of Economics will also receive money as part of this funding round.
