Students from medical and dental schools in Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter and Plymouth have launched a new research journal to showcase original research undertaken by their peers.
INSPIRE Student Health Sciences Research Journal is part of a collaborative project under the national INSPIRE scheme funded by the Wellcome Trust. The scheme, launched in 2013, encourages student doctors, dentists and vets to consider a career in research as well as publication of their work.
Senior editor Izabella Smolicz, previously at the University of Bristol Medical School and now studying at University College London, said: “I hope it is useful for students to gain an insight into the types of projects they can get involved in and the opportunities available, whatever stage they are at in their studies.”
The first issue of the journal can be accessed online with its contents including stress in neurosurgeons, tooth donation and the future of dentistry. Other reports include the development of new diagnostic tests for Addison’s disease in dogs and efforts to tackle high numbers of maternal deaths in India.
Professor of Clinical Diabetes and Metabolism at Cardiff University, Colin Dayan, said: “We believe the INSPIRE journal is the first of its kind to bring together medical, dental and veterinary students from four different Universities in such an ambitious research writing project. It started from an idea from students in 2014 and has taken two years to realise, but the final product is an outstanding showcase of science writing and primary research from students at different stages in their careers.”
