The 2016 Nobel Physics Prize has been won by three British scientists.
David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz received the award from the Nobel voting committee for ‘theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter.’One half of the Prize was awarded to Thouless from the University of Washington and the other half was shared by Haldane and Kosterlitz from Princeton and Brown University respectively.
Their research has involved advanced mathematical methods to study unusual phases of matter such as superconductors, superfluids or thin magnetic films. It has enabled scientists to search for new phases of matter with future applications in materials science and electronics.
Haldane said: “I was, as everyone else is, very surprised. And very gratified... A lot of tremendous new discoveries that are based on this original work are now happening.”
