A biotech company has received EU approval for a test able to detect chlamydia in 30 minutes.
The device, produced by Atlas Genetics, requires a swab, blood or urine sample to be placed in a cartridge-like device which is then analysed, with a result obtained in half an hour.
John Clarkson, chief executive at Atlas Genetics, said: “What we’ve done is take a very complex workflow that would normally be run in a lab with a number of highly skilled people and several pieces of equipment and miniaturised that into single disposable cartridge where the process is quick and anyone can run it.”
It is hoped the test can be carried out in a doctor’s surgery rather than in a hospital, with same day results and a prescription for the patient if needed.
