Imperial College London has received £40 million from Michael Uren and his foundation to build a biomedical engineering centre.
The Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub – named after its philanthropist – will house biomedical sciences and engineering initiatives and accommodate research into new and affordable medical technology and treatment of a diverse range of medical conditions.
Sir Keith O’Nions, President of Imperial College London, said: “Imperial is profoundly grateful to Michael Uren and his foundation for this remarkable gift, the most generous it has ever received. It will create a wholly new building and set of facilities for engineers and medics to come together and make new discoveries and innovations on an unparalleled scale. It provides enormous impetus to the development of Imperial West as an innovation district.”
The 13-story centre – key component of Imperial College London’s White City Campus – will provide research laboratories, a 150-seat auditorium and a social spaces to encourage informal exchange of ideas. The hub will also incorporate clinical areas that will provide patients with direct access to innovations in healthcare.
“The Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub will harness the expertise of our engineers, scientists and researchers under one roof – to drive forward medical technology and bring direct benefits to patients,” said Graham Stark, the Development Director for the White City Campus.
Recently, the local Councils granted planning permission for the construction of the hub. The new development will follow two new buildings – part of the White City Campus – which have already started construction and are expected to be completed in 2017.
“We’re delighted to have planning permission and look forward to continuing to work with the Council as we realise this important step for our White City Campus,” said Mr Stark.
