Beyond the Finite; The Sublime in Art and Science
16 Mar 2012 by Evoluted New Media
Beyond the Finite explores the claims of science and art to the sublime – exploring images taken by Hubble, representations of DNA to Disney’s Pinocchio and covering topics such as Quantum Romanticism and animation and autonomy.
Placed squarely at the border between science and art, Roald Hoffmann and Iain Boyd Whyte covers a broad spectrum of perspectives, with neuroscience, astronomy and physics illuminating the sublime alongside film, art and music.
Although each chapter is written by a different contributor – including a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, a couple of eminent art historians, and a professor of "Animal Well-Being Science" – the book still has a natural flow, which makes it an enjoyable read.
