Sanofi to oust Pfizer as leader of global pharma sales in 2012

Sanofi is expected to oust Pfizer as number one for global pharmaceutical sales says EvaluatePharma Ltd, with Pfizer relegated to number three in the ranking. EvaluatePharma predict Sanofi will take the top spot amongst the world’s pharma manufacturer in 2012, and maintain the position through to 2016, with a predicted year-on-year growth on 4%. Pfizer will be relegated to third in the table, with Novartis taking second spot with a predicted year-on-year growth of 2%.
French drug maker Sanofi has raced up the ranking in the last decade, largely through M&A activity with the $20bn purchase of Genzyme earlier this year, say EvaluatePharma.
“The takeover of Genzyme, an aggressive cross-border move, revealed just how much the culture of Sanofi has changed in the last few years,” said Dr Jonathan de Pass, chief executive of EvaluatePharma. “Coming just as Pfizer loses Liptor, the acquisition should be enough to secure Sanofi the top spot for the next few years, our data suggests.”~
