The International Biology Olympiad is an annual event celebrating some of the world’s foremost secondary school biology students. Each of the approximately 60 participating countries enters up to four of its most talented secondary school biology students to compete for prestigious medals.
During this week-long event - held in Canada on 15-22 July - the competitors will participate in intensive theory and practical biology examinations that will be facilitated by a panel of over 200 international experts.
In the build-up to the competition, the four young biologists on the British team will use the Department of Biosciences’ £1 million teaching laboratories and research facilities to refine their skills in tackling biological problems.
Martin Warren, Professor of Biochemistry at Kent and the Department’s liaison for the British team, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide these exceptional young scientists with the opportunity to train in our facilities and hope that it prepares them well for the competition ahead.”
The 2007 British Biology Olympiad team consists of: Gonzalo Garcia (St Paul’s School, London), Gregory Lewis (Bishops Wordsworth’s School, Salisbury), Charles Parker (Purse School, Cambridge) and Olga Tkachenko (Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington, Surrey).
Laboratory News wishes the intrepid Olympiads the best of luck!
