Peter Hollins, Chief Executive of the BHF and a member of the judging panel said: “From congenital heart disease to cardiac arrest, the images reflected the hard work, commitment and pride that doctors and scientists supported by the charity apply to their research.”
Dr Richard Clayton from the Department of Computer Science at University of Sheffield won with an image from his BHF research project using computer models to investigate abnormal electrical activity in the heart. The image depicts the loop of electrical activity across the heart at the onset of cardiac arrest. The activity (in red) will fragment, resulting in lethal electrical anarchy.
Dr Clayton said: “This type of computational model gives powerful insight into the mechanisms of normal and abnormal electrical activity in the heart while reducing the need for experiments using animal tissue.”
For his successful image, Dr Clayton received a £350 travel grant to attend a scientific event or conference.
