Environmental considerations and energy efficiency are becoming increasingly important. The seminar, “Safe and Environmentally Friendly Fume Cupboard Design - can energy efficient fume cupboards also be safe?” in London recently explored this topic. With 63 participants from all over the UK and Ireland, the mix of people included those from the public and private sector, architects and consultants, who all enjoyed the opportunity to mix with their peers.
Feedback from the event has been very positive; topics such as energy efficient fume cupboard design are very popular as the push for green equipment is ubiquitous. The current status of implementation of BS EN 14175 generated quite a bit of debate. It was both interesting and concerning to see how much variation there is between EU participants in setting performance criteria. Waldner received very good comments regarding their impromptu overview on banding as a likely solution in the UK, it gave some comfort that maybe we will set more acceptable performance criteria and attendees felt they are now more comfortable with the issues involved.
Ross Roberts, Principal Mechanical Engineer at Pfizer told us that; “all in all it was a useful seminar that generated quite a bit of useful debate.” He added that “Overall I thought the event was quite interesting and useful. It was worth taking a day out to attend.”
This is an exciting platform for industry professionals to exchange ideas and to network, 99% of the people that attended wanted to see another seminar take place in 2007.
Environmental considerations and energy efficiency are becoming increasingly important. The seminar explored this topic in depth presentations included:
• a vision of the laboratory environment in 2020
• fume cupboard design and testing according to BS EN 14175
• international safety concepts
• fixed versus variable extract volumes
• energy efficient fume cupboard design
• low volume fume cupboards in teaching environments
• long term user experience with low volume fume cupboards at a large scale University installation.
