A shocking new survey of British pay shows scientists trailing behind train drivers, engineers, software professionals and taxation experts. With biological scientists earning on average £32,193 it’s not all bad news, but these life scientists still trail behind physicists who earn around £39,837 per annum. Bringing up the rear are laboratory technicians, no laboratory can run without them but they earn just £21,263 a year.
This analysis, by GMB, shows the average annual gross earnings of all 342 occupational groups in Great Britain. It uncovers the fact that the average pay of the highest earning group, directors and chief executives at £162,028 is sixteen times higher than the lowest group - leisure and theme park attendants on £10,400.
This divide clearly shows that the pay of all those at the bottom and the middle of the pay league is closely controlled. However the pay of senior managers and directors is subject to little control. For the full listing of jobs click here.
