14 Nov 2022
Heriot-Watt University and Technology Scotland will work together to boost access to sustainable medical device design capabilities for small to medium enterprises (SMEs).
For a five year period, the university’s Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (MDMC), will tap into Technology Scotland’s Product Design Scotland Network, including more than 125 industrial and academic members, to help bring innovative medical and healthcare solutions to market.
Information will also be shared across Heriot-Watt’s global campuses including sites in Dubai and Malaysia, plus its MDMC partner academic institutions, including the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow and Robert Gordon University
In addition to providing free expert advice and access on manufacturing engineering, regulatory issues and funding, the centre also offers access to its £2 million specialist manufacturing facilities.
MDMC director Professor Duncan Hand, director of the MDMC at Heriot-Watt University, said: “Access to specialist design capability is one of the biggest challenges that SMEs working in this sector currently face.
“It is essential that expert support is more easily and consistently accessible to SMEs to translate their game changing innovations into devices that can be more quickly adopted for the benefit of patient care. ”
