Putin invasion has seen loss of two out of three clinical investigator sites in Ukraine and Russia
12 Mar 2023
The number of recruiting clinical investigator sites in the countries most impacted by the invasion of Ukraine is continuing its downward spiral, suggests latest reports.
Phesi’s third analysis of clinical development in Ukraine, Russia, Belarussia and Poland since the September 2021 shows only the latter country is maintaining its scale of contribution.
Both Russia and Ukraine have experienced falls of nearly two thirds in this period; from 3329 to 1239 and from 1769 to 670 respectively. Belarusian figures have halved in the same timed, dropping from 105 to 54.
While the figures represent a record low, the rate of decline is less sharp. Phesi conducted two previous surveys, in March and October 2022, that demonstrate the sharpest falls for both Ukraine and Russia occurred during March and June last year.
In Belarus the decline was more gradual but, after a low of 36 in November, subsequently rose month-on-month to grow to 54 sites overall in March.
By contrast, Poland maintained its numbers of sites close to the 3429 it recorded in September 2021 and has surpassed that level in every recorded month since May 2022 and gone on to record 3699 this month (March).
