Demand for EU critical chemicals law to ensure production of key molecules
13 Mar 2025

The EU must take action to protect production of nearly 20 key molecules deemed vital to industrial production, says a statement from eight member states.
France, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary called for a critical chemicals act “dedicated to the preservation and transition of the industrial chemical sector and its competitiveness”.
The molecules recommended for inclusion include:
- Olefin petrochemicals ethylene, propylene and butadiene
- Aromatic petrochemicals benzene, toluene and xylene
- Chlorine, sodium hydroxide, sulphur, silicon, sodium carbonates, hydrofluoric acid, methionine and lysine
- Low carbon footprint substitutes to the above including those in development
