This is a micro CT scan of a 1 day old male armyworm showing its exoskeleton, soft tissues and tracheal system.
Scientists from Western University, in Canada, have used CO2 to immobilise insects and produce 3D images of their internal structures and exoskeletons using micro-CT. The CO2-induced hypoxia allows both internal and external body movements to be stopped so the animals can be imaged, without affecting their longevity or mating success.
The study was published by Poinapen et al in BMC Zoology.
