Lagoon Nebula

The stellar nursery of the Lagoon Nebula lies in the constellation of Sagittarius is situated some 5,000 light years away.
Despite being light years away the Lagoon Nebula is one of the few star-forming nebulae that it is possible to see with the naked eye in optimum conditions from mid-northern latitudes. This stunning image is one of the shortlisted pictures for the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition organised by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. The awards will be announced on 17 September.
