US technical consultancy leaders Jacobs has won a £10 million contract to support National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) design and refurbishment projects at several of the organisation’s facilities in the UK.
The work will include design, build and refurbishment for the Windscale and Central Laboratories based at Sellafield, a specialist analytical services and process chemistry facility in Preston as well as a test-rig centre in Workington.
The contract will run for an initial year but with options for up to three 12 month extensions.
“This work will help ensure that the U.K.’s advanced nuclear research and development capability remains world-class,” said Senior Vice President, Security & Technology at Jacobs Energy, Karen Wiemelt.
“We will draw on our deep knowledge of nuclear engineering design and our decades-long experience of operating our own 12,000 square metre complex of laboratories and test rigs in Warrington, U.K,” she said.
NNL Chief Customer Officer David Beacham added it was crucial that the organisation continued to invest in its laboratories to meet stakeholders needs as well as wider industry ambitions and for NNL perform its role as the national laboratory for nuclear fission.
He stated: “Our people and facilities are our most important assets, so this project will continue to protect and create highly skilled jobs in the northwest of England.”
