Cleanroom microbiology solutions leader Cherwell Laboratories has been acquired by the German global group AnalytiChem, which operates subsidiaries based in Europe, North America and Australia.
Founded in Bicester in 1971 by Lawrence Whittard, Cherwell was originally a veterinary diagnostic lab. Whittard, went on to develop the firm’s focus on environmental and process monitoring for pharmaceutical manufacturing and later expanding into healthcare and industrial applications.
Leadership of the family firm passed to the present MD Andy Whittard after Lawrence Whittard stepped down in 2005, dying in 2020.
Andy Whittard, who continues in his role post-acquisition, said the latest development would enhance the potential development of Cherwell.
He stated: “Within the AnalytiChem group, Cherwell will be able to leverage collaboration opportunities, especially with our new sister company bioTrading, alongside our focused offering of environmental and process monitoring products to the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.”
Raoul Biskupek, Group CEO at AnalytiChem commented the addition of Cherwell permitted the group to offer an even broader, while specialised, portfolio.
“This complementary offering opens exciting growth opportunities for our subsidiaries in the adjacent countries and our strong distribution partners network,” he said.
AnalytiChem’s other businesses include AnalytiChem GmbH/ Bernd Kraft, Chem-Lab, Chem Service, Northeast Laboratory Services, OREAS and SCP Science.
