Three nation European partnership to advance heart disease treatment

The British Heart Foundation (BHF), Dutch Heart Foundation (DHF) and German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) have combined forces for a new round of investment to support medical breakthroughs in cardiovascular treatment.
Four international teams will benefit from sharing a £4.7 million package for projects ranging from a study of the warning signs of future heart problems after pregnancy to pinpointing the effects of anti-inflammatory drugs on atherosclerosis, a leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.
Other projects examine the underlying causes of cardiomyopathies, heart muscle diseases that can lead to heart failure or sudden cardiac arrest.
Four previous rounds of awards have been made by the partnership, and for the second time funding will be specifically targeted at supporting mid-career researchers in the three countries. The awards will also help to accelerate investigators’ potential to become future leaders in their research fields.
Professor Metin Avkiran, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said the BHF was delighted to be building on the previous success of the awards over five years.
“By joining forces to support the best and the brightest across our countries to work together on pressing problems, we can ensure the money donated by our generous supporters goes further to power more lifesaving research,” he stated.
“Scientific progress thrives on international collaboration. Through this funding we can help to cement collaborations between future research leaders that will continue to reap rewards long after these projects have finished.”
