Europe to mark lab science’s key role again with dedicated day
30 Sep 2024
European Laboratory Day returns on 5 November to focus on the contribution of laboratory medicine professionals across the continent.
EFLM – the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine is encouraging its members to host open-door events and highlight the key role of the sector in public health, science and the broader pharmaceutical industry.
It coincides with the midway point in the European Union’s six-year EU4Health programme, that concludes in 2027 and aims to strengthen Europe’s health systems and improve its crisis preparedness. The federation said that laboratory professionals played an essential part in driving innovation, ensuring accurate diagnostics, and supporting critical research to ensure better patient outcomes.
“Laboratory medicine professionals are at the heart of some of the most important healthcare decisions,” stated Tara Rolic, chair of the European Laboratory Day Task Group.
“European Laboratory Day is an opportunity to showcase the diversity, skills, and impact of our sector; and shine a light on the professionals behind the key decisions that are helping shape a healthier future for Europe.”
It has been estimated that nearly three quarters of current global medical decisions are dependent on laboratory test results, says EFLM, while recent global health challenges only accentuated this role.
The non-profit organisation is the European Region member of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). Spring next year also marks the return of World Laboratory Day, which takes place on 23 April.
