Cancel all your plans for the weekend – Science is Vital needs you to support an urgent campaign aimed at preventing destructive funding cuts to science and engineering in the UK.
Science in Vital is hoping to convince the Government not to announce the feared level of cuts in the Comprehensive Spending Review on 20th October. Many scientists and engineers fear that the UK will lose its ability to respond to scientific challenges – from pandemic flu to volcanic ash – and fail to benefit from economic growth that research and development is proven to give.
Helped by the Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE), Science is Vital founder Jenny Rohn has organised a campaign to emphasise the important of not reducing support for science and engineering, and invest in the sector like other countries have done during the recent recession.
You can show your support for the campaign in one of three ways:
Firstly sign the petition available at scienceisvital.org.uk/sign-the-petition It’s already reached over 15,262 signatories.
Secondly you can join the public rally outside the Treasury at 2pm on Saturday 9th October. More information here: scienceisvital.org.uk/attend-the-demo Speakers include Simon Singh, Ben Goldacre and Colin Blakemore.
Lastly you can ask your MP to sign EDM 767 – an Early Day Motion to Parliament put forward by Julian Huppert calling on the Government to preserve UK Science and Engineering. You can also invite him or her to a lobby of Parliament on Tuesday 12th October at 3.30pm in Committee Room 10.
