The centres will host world-class academics and research teams with particular capabilities in nuclear science and engineering who will work alongside global power systems company Rolls-Royce. The UTCs will focus on material properties, modelling of processes in nuclear plants, and the safety and reliability of nuclear power.
“We take great pride in selecting universities that are world leaders in their field,” said Colin Smith, Rolls Royce director of engineering and technology, “The Universities of Manchester and Imperial are proven centres of excellence for Nuclear Science.”
The University of Manchester are also a founding member of the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC); Rolls-Royce is the lead industrial partner.
“The University of Manchester has a long history of academic collaboration with Rolls-Royce and this superb new facility further strengthens that relationship,” said Professor Colin Bailey, vice-president and dean of the faculty of engineering and physical sciences at Manchester.
“The Centre will underpin the science and engineering needed by the industry,” he added, “The UTC will allow further exchange of skills between The University and Rolls-Royce and provide new opportunities for training and development.”
